Anne Vera Veen
Anne Vera Veen is a Dutch researcher, curator, and activist whose work explores the intersection of visual anthropology, art, and urban spaces. With a background in visual anthropology, Veen's research practice often delves into the dynamics of social and cultural systems, incorporating both research and creative expression. She co-founded Galerie de Jaloezie, a platform in Rotterdam dedicated to showcasing audiovisual arts and experimental films, fostering a space for contemporary art that engages with social and cultural issues. Veen’s work is marked by her commitment to using art as a tool for social reflection and her dedication to amplifying diverse narratives within the context of urban environments.
As project leader at the Amstercam Architecture Centre (ARCAM), Veen initiated the Subjective Atlas of Amsterdam (published in 2023), which allowed her to collaborate with various communities to capture personal and subjective interpretations of the city. Her engagement involved selecting participating communities, organising workshops, and curating related presentations and exhibitions, where participants contributed maps and artistic works that portrayed Amsterdam’s diverse identities, often highlighting marginalized voices. Her work at Arcam was central to ensuring that the subjective experiences of residents were mindfully represented, pushing the boundaries of traditional cartography to explore new ways of mapping urban life.
