Taqi Shaheen

Taqi Shaheen is a filmmaker and media artist based in Pakistan whose work crosses media and defies genre distinctions to fashion witty and curious observations of contemporary South Asian cultures and mediascapes. Since 2004, he has been working closely with artists, designers, musicians, and performers to produce collaborative works using artistic practices, pedagogic alternatives, and creative investigations to address the experiences of learning and the dilemmas of education in the developing world.

Shaheen reached out to Subjective Editions in 2014 to set up a Subjective Atlas of Pakistan that we developed in the following years and published in 2018. Shaheen engaged his students at the University of Karachi to contribute, as well as students, artists, and architects from different places spread over Pakistan, to develop mappings for the atlas. Shaheen’s contribution is rooted in his interest in how literal and metaphorical maps can convey complex notions of national identity. With his work, he highlights the power of visual media in shaping our understanding of a country's social and political landscape, contributing to a broader conversation on how subjective viewpoints can offer an understanding of national identity.
